New Prints Available! by Shingo Shimizu

These 3 original works (‘JPN:RGB’) were painted on 6 x 6” canvases with acrylic gouache. All paintings were sold at the Small Cures 2019 art show in Toronto. Was a little sad to see them go, but had them scanned before the show, and finally got around to cleaning them up a bit.

These are Giclee Prints on Strathmore Fine Art Paper. 7.75 x 7.75”. Signed and numbered edition of 100.

Check them out in the shop!

Start to Finish. New Series of 12. by Shingo Shimizu

Hello, been a while!

I've been away with a full time position as a graphic designer. But now I'm back as an illustrator! There were a few projects I was able to work on, and will hopefully get around to it updating my site over the next month or so. Also to get the illustrator gears running again, I've cranked out this small series I call 'Start to Finish'.

These images were originally conceived as parts of a collage illustration for an article. I always found them so humorous, but thought it was a shame that they were so tiny and under developed. They had potential to be individual pieces, if they were given some love. So after leaving my full time job, I decided that this would be the first series I would work on as a personal project.

Also I've always thought that 'context' was such an interesting thing. I mean some images here are more obvious than others. But placing an image in a certain context, our minds connect the dots to give it new meaning. For example placing like placing a 'hello kitty' on some underwear, or some well known branding on a stack of condoms. It's no longer 'just sex'. It's become something more than that.

Here they are as a series of 12, with more love (12 x 12").

Prints available for sale upon request.

She Was Born Into Vengeance by Shingo Shimizu

I'm sure everybody has seen the movie: 'Kill Bill vol.1' by Quentin Tarantino. Lucy Liu's character borrows quite a lot from a character in a 1973 Japanese film called 'Lady Snowblood', starring Kaji Meiko. She also sings the theme song, which is also used for the final battle scene between Lucy Liu and Uma Thurman in 'Kill Bill'. If you don't know it, take a look here. Similarities are all over the place! Such a fun film.

Anyhow, this main character became the theme for my submission for the DOS group show. If you haven't seen what I did last year, take a look here. This time around, I attempted another mash up of cultures with the 'Dia de los Muertos' theme with Japanese Samurai Cinema. I wanted to keep it dark, but unlike last year, I wanted it to be badass.

I've got some 18x24" (out of 100) available for sale (DOS Show) as well as one giant 24x36" framed print! Of course if you're interested, let me know.

Happy 2013, for real! by Shingo Shimizu

Embarrisingly, I started my first post of the year by wishing everyone a 'Happy 2013!', in the subject header, and nothing in the post. Note to self, to not post anything on my iphone before going to bed. So here's the actual post…

Happy 2013 everyone! Wishing you, your business, family and friends happiness and health in 2013! To the thousands that checked out my site regularly in 2012, I want to thank you for all your support. I hope that you will continue to come back and see what I've been up to. If you're an art director, designer, photographer or illustrator, I look forward to possibly working with you in the near future! On a different note, when you work alone, it's extremely difficult to get around to updating the portfolio site. Which is why I'm just doing this now. I've just started to add a few projects from summer and fall of last year: 4 illustrations for the 100th GreyCup CFL Championship (commissioned by Bensimon Byrne), and photographs of Scion Canada magazine issue #3. Check it out below.

DON'T FORGET > that my Def Jam print is finally up on my InPrnt page for sale. Check it here >

ps: Would appreciate it so much, if you could spread the love by 'liking' my posts and or tweeting. :)

More work will be uploaded this week. See you back soon!
